What is male urology?

Male urology is the area of urology that focuses specifically on urological health issues that affect men, including issues that affect the prostate and the testicles, as well as the kidneys, bladder and other structures.

What is a PSA test?

PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, and a PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of this antigen in your blood. High levels of PSA can be indicative of prostate cancer, but they can also indicate other medical conditions affecting the prostate. If a PSA test yields a higher-than-normal result, additional testing will be used to determine if cancer is present.

What is benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH?

BPH is a relatively common condition that usually affects older men, causing enlargement of the prostate that is not related to cancer. In BPH, men may experience some symptoms similar to those associated with prostate cancer, including an increased urgency to urinate, a weak urine stream and a feeling that the bladder cannot be completely emptied. BPH can usually be successfully treated with medication.

What causes male infertility?

The primary causes of male infertility include problems with the structure or motility of the sperm or issues that interfere with the production of sperm or the transport of sperm enabling them to be mixed with the semen prior to ejaculation. Erectile dysfunction or ejaculatory problems, infections, varicocele (varicose veins in the testicle), hormone imbalances, prior surgery, long-term use of some medications or medical therapies, and even certain types of tumors may all play a role in causing male infertility. Some issues can be easily remedied while others may require more extensive treatment. Any suspected issue of infertility should be evaluated by a urologist as soon as possible to rule out serious issues like cancer and to obtain treatment that may improve fertility.
